What Cancellation Letter Generator does
Cancelling a contract sounds trivial until you face the blank page. Which notice period applies? To which date can you cancel? Is an email enough or must it be in writing? And worse: is cancellation even the right tool, or do you have a right of withdrawal that is far stronger? This cancellation letter takes all these questions off your plate instead of leaving you with a generic template.
The tool knows 30 contract types across eight categories: telecoms, energy, subscriptions, insurance, banking, rent, employment and other. For each type the actual legal rules are built in - no blanket assumption that every contract has a three-month notice period. A mobile contract after the 2021 TKG reform cancels differently than a car insurance, and the notice engine computes exactly that.
The cleverest part is the triage between withdrawal and cancellation. If you concluded a contract online or by phone and it is less than 14 days old, you probably have a right of withdrawal under Section 355 BGB. Withdrawal is stronger than cancellation: the contract is undone retroactively and all payments must be refunded, whereas cancellation only works for the future. The tool spots these cases and points them out before you pick the wrong remedy.
For the deadline, the engine computes the concrete end date. For a mobile contract after the minimum term, for example monthly cancellability with one month’s notice; for residential rent the graduated periods under Section 573c BGB; for an employment contract the periods from Section 622 BGB. Frequently asked questions
Is an email enough to cancel?
It depends on the contract. Since the legal reform, many consumer contracts can be cancelled in text form, so by email or a cancellation button too. Others need written form with a handwritten signature under Section 126 BGB. The cancellation letter tells you which form applies for your contract type.
What is the difference between withdrawal and cancellation?
Withdrawal undoes a contract retroactively so all payments are refunded - for distance contracts it usually applies 14 days after conclusion or instruction under Section 355 BGB. Cancellation, by contrast, ends the contract only for the future. When both are possible, withdrawal is almost always the stronger choice, and the tool flags it.
How do I work out the right notice period?
You do not have to - the notice engine knows the rules per contract type and computes the concrete end date. It accounts for minimum terms, monthly cancellability after the TKG reform, the residential graduation under Section 573c BGB and the employment periods under Section 622 BGB.
Should I cancel by registered mail?
In a dispute, what counts is being able to prove the cancellation arrived. Registered mail with proof of delivery is common for that. The tool gives a current note on the delivery method so your cancellation is not only formally correct but also demonstrably received.
Can I cancel my employment contract with this?
For a regular employee resignation, yes - the employment category covers the periods under Section 622 BGB.
