What Bank Statement Import does
Almost every German bank lets you download your transactions as CSV, but barely any two do it in the same format. Sparkasse, Volksbank, DKB, ING and the rest name columns differently, use sometimes a comma, sometimes a semicolon and sometimes their own date formats. The bank statement import catches this chaos. You upload the file and the tool tries to map date, purpose, amount and IBAN to the right roles automatically.
Where the automatic mapping is uncertain, you can assign the columns yourself. The tool shows a preview, you decide which column holds the date, the amount and the purpose, and the rest is ignored. That way the import works even with exotic exports that standard software chokes on.
The real work is the categorisation. The import comes with an extensive set of rules that recognises typical payees and purposes: Rewe, Aldi and Lidl become groceries, Netflix and Spotify subscriptions, rent and property management become housing, salary and wages become income, utilities and telecom become utility costs. That turns a wild list into a structured breakdown, and you finally see where your money actually goes.
Duplicates are a real problem with bank statements, for example when monthly files overlap. The import detects duplicate bookings and flags them, so your totals are not distorted by accidental doubling. You stay in control of what stays in and what does not.
From the categorised transactions the tool builds a monthly overview with income, expenses and balance per month plus a breakdown by category. You can sort and filter by date, amount, description or category to examine specific areas in detail. The result can be exported as CSV or JSON, for example for tax or a household budget.
Privacy is especially delicate with account data. The parsing and categorising runs in your browser, your transactions are not permanently stored on a server. So you get a proper analysis without entrusting your complete financial history to a service. No bank login, no account access, just your downloaded file.

Frequently asked questions
Which banks are supported?
In principle any bank that offers a CSV export. For common formats from Sparkasse, Volksbank, DKB, ING and others the import detects the columns automatically. For unusual formats you assign the columns yourself in a few clicks, so practically any CSV statement works.
How does the automatic categorisation work?
The tool matches the payee and purpose of each booking against an extensive rule set. Known names such as Rewe, Netflix, utilities or employer identifiers are assigned to matching categories like groceries, subscriptions, utilities or salary. Unrecognised bookings land in Other and can be sorted manually.
Are my account data uploaded or stored?
Reading, categorising and analysing runs in your browser. Your transactions are not permanently stored on a server. There is no bank login and no account access - the tool works solely with the CSV file you upload yourself.
What happens with duplicate bookings?
The import detects bookings that occur more than once, for example because two monthly files overlap, and flags them as duplicates. That way they do not distort your totals. You decide whether they stay in the analysis or are removed.
Can I reuse the analysis?
Yes. You can export the categorised transactions as CSV or JSON and process them further in a spreadsheet, your household budget or for your tax return. The monthly overview also gives you a quick view of income, expenses and balance.
