Storage sizes are a perennial muddle. The drive maker advertises a terabyte, the operating system shows less, and nobody knows off the top of their head how many megabytes are actually in a gigabyte. The storage calculator clears this up: you enter a value and a unit, and it instantly converts it into every other unit from bytes to exabytes, neatly in a table.

The root of the whole misunderstanding is the difference between binary and decimal. Computers work in powers of two, so with the factor 1024: 1 kibibyte is 1024 bytes, 1 gibibyte is 1024 mebibytes. Storage makers, on the other hand, advertise in round thousands, so with the factor 1000: 1 kilobyte is 1000 bytes. That is exactly why your 1 TB drive looks smaller in the system. The calculator separates both worlds with a switch and names the units correctly, so KiB and GiB in binary mode, KB and GB in decimal mode.

So the numbers do not stay abstract, there are the vivid comparisons.
