PDF Password

A payslip, a contract, a medical report - some PDFs do not belong in the wrong hands. PDF Password encrypts your files with a password and AES, or removes the protection again when you know the password. All in your browser.

What PDF Password does

A PDF is open by default like a book - anyone who has the file can read, copy and print it. For a job application that may not matter, for sensitive paperwork it does. PDF Password puts a password over the file so it only opens with the correct key.

You choose between several encryption strengths. AES-256 is the current standard and the strongest option, AES-128 is a bit more compatible with older PDF viewers, and RC4-128 exists for very old software. In most cases you pick AES-256 and are on the safe side.

Beyond plain open protection you can set permissions. A user password demands the key already when opening. An owner password allows reading but blocks printing, copying or editing, depending on which boxes you tick. That way you release a document for viewing without someone simply copying the content out.

If you know the password of a protected file, the unlock mode reverses the process and saves the PDF without protection. Handy when you sent yourself an encrypted document and want to get rid of the password dialog on every open. A batch mode processes several files with the same password at once.

Encryption and decryption run directly in your browser. Neither your file nor your password is uploaded or stored on a server. With a security tool that is the decisive point: a password that travels over someone else's servers is no longer a password. Here both stay on your device.

Features

AES-256 encryption

Protect PDFs with the current standard AES-256, or pick AES-128 and RC4-128 for older viewers.

User and owner password

Demand a password at opening or allow reading and block only printing, copying and editing.

Control permissions

Decide with checkboxes whether the document may be printed, copied or modified.

Remove protection again

If you know the password, the tool unlocks the file and saves it without the annoying password dialog.

Batch processing

Protect or unlock several PDFs with the same password in one pass.

Password stays local

Encryption and decryption run in the browser. Neither file nor password leaves your device.

How it works

    Add a file

Drag your PDF into the window or select several files for batch processing.

  3. 3

    Set password and options

Type a password, pick the encryption strength and set the permissions when protecting.

  4. 4

    Process and download

One click encrypts or unlocks the file in the browser. Download the result straight away.

Frequently asked questions

Is my password stored anywhere?

No. Encryption and decryption run entirely in your browser. Neither the file nor the password is uploaded or stored. Both stay on your device.

What is the difference between user and owner password?

The user password is demanded already when opening - without it you cannot see the document at all. The owner password allows reading but blocks actions like printing, copying or editing, depending on your settings.

Which encryption should I choose?

AES-256 is the current standard and the right choice for most cases. AES-128 is a bit more compatible with older PDF viewers, RC4-128 is meant only for very old software.

Can I remove the protection again?

Yes, if you know the password. The unlock mode saves the PDF without encryption. Without the correct password it is not possible - the tool does not crack files you do not own.

Can I protect several files at once?

Yes. Batch processing encrypts or unlocks several PDFs with the same password in one pass.

What happens if I forget the password?

Then you can no longer get into the protected PDF. There is no backdoor and no recovery. Note the password in a safe place before you encrypt an important file.
