SNES — Retro Console

The Super Nintendo Entertainment System, or SNES, was the great leap from 8 to 16 bit in 1990. More colors, larger sprites, multiple stacked background layers and the legendary Mode 7 effect that let whole planes rotate and tilt - the SNES defined how an early-nineties video game had to look and sound. Sony sound chip delivered orchestral melodies that are remembered to this day. This retro console brings that era into the browser via the open-source emulator EmulatorJS.

As with the other consoles, a clear rule applies: only homebrew games run here. These are new titles that a dedicated scene still develops for the original SNES hardware and releases under free licenses or as public domain. That way you get real 16-bit games without the legal gray area of copied commercial cartridges - fair to the developers and with no guilty conscience.

The SNES pad was a small milestone at the time: a directional pad, four action buttons in the famous diamond arrangement plus two shoulder buttons. The emulator maps exactly this layout. On the keyboard the directional pad sits on the arrow keys, the action and shoulder buttons on surrounding letter keys. If you want full control over the many buttons, it is best to plug in a USB gamepad, which the emulator also supports.

The homebrew titles show what is inside the hardware: colorful platformers, tricky puzzle games, small action adventures and technical demos that celebrate the Mode 7 effect. You pick a title from the list, the ROM loads and the game starts right away. For full focus there is a fullscreen mode that stretches the 16-bit world across the whole screen.
