Game Boy Advance — Retro Console

When Nintendo unveiled the Game Boy Advance in 2001, the leap was enormous: the small handheld brought 32-bit power and a color display, achieving graphics that came close to the Super Nintendo - only now on the go, in your pocket. The GBA became one of the best-selling handhelds ever. This retro console brings that power back into the browser via the open-source emulator EmulatorJS.

As with all consoles here, a clear rule applies: only homebrew games run. The GBA is a popular target for the homebrew scene because its capable hardware leaves lots of room for creative ideas. Developers still program new titles for the original system today and release them under free licenses or as public domain. That way you get real GBA games without copied commercial cartridges and the associated legal gray area.

The homebrew titles for the GBA show the range of the hardware: colorful platformers with smooth animation, small role-playing games, technically demanding puzzle and action games and impressive graphics demos. Because the GBA had far more colors and computing power than its predecessors, many of these games look surprisingly high quality. The GBA controller is built into the device: a directional pad, the buttons A and B, two shoulder buttons L and R plus Start and Select. The emulator maps this layout onto the keyboard - directional pad on the arrow keys, the buttons on surrounding letter keys. For more comfort you plug in a USB gamepad, which the emulator also supports. A fullscreen mode stretches the picture across the whole screen.
