NES - Retro Console

The Nintendo Entertainment System, known in Japan as the Famicom, is one of the most important game consoles of all time. After the great video game crash of 1983, the NES brought the industry back to life and, with its directional pad and two action buttons, shaped controls that every gamepad still keeps at its core today. This retro console brings exactly that feeling into the browser, rendered via the open-source emulator EmulatorJS.

The list is made of homebrew games: new titles that hobbyist and indie developers still program for the original hardware, decades after the console ended. We took unofficial fan ports of commercial games out of the list. We ship the bundled games ourselves, and their licences are being checked one by one.

The homebrew scene around the NES is astonishingly lively. From tight arcade skill games through puzzle titles and small platformers to reinterpretations of classics, you find a colorful selection. Every game runs with the same pixel aesthetic, the same characteristic sound chip and the same honest difficulty the era was known for. You simply pick a title from the list and the game starts.

Controls run via the keyboard: the directional pad sits on the arrow keys, A on Z, B on X, Start on Enter and Select on V. If you like it original, plug in a USB gamepad - the emulator supports controllers, so it all feels like back on the sofa. For undisturbed play there is a fullscreen mode.

Technically everything runs directly in your browser. EmulatorJS executes the homebrew ROMs on your device, there is no download and no installation. The game files load as soon as you pick a title, and then you play right away. No account, no signup, no ads between the levels.
