Real Salary Calculator

Gross is a number on paper. What do you really earn works out what actually remains of your salary after taxes, social contributions, commuting and hidden work costs - and what an hour of your life really pays. More honest than your payslip will ever be.

What Real Salary Calculator does

When someone quotes you an annual salary, it often sounds impressive. What of it lands in your account at the end of the month is a completely different story. This tool makes the journey from gross to honest net visible and goes further than any ordinary net salary calculator: it also factors in the time and the hidden costs your job really costs you.

The first step is the clean net calculation. From your gross salary, tax class, child allowances, federal state and the surcharge of your health insurer, the tool works out income tax, the solidarity surcharge, church tax where applicable, plus the four social insurance contributions for health, long-term care, pension and unemployment. The 2026 contribution assessment ceilings are stored so the contributions are correctly capped at higher salaries.

The real eye-opener is the true hourly wage. Your contract may say 40 hours a week, but anyone doing unpaid overtime, commuting two hours in the morning and preparing for the next day in the evening effectively works much more. The tool divides your real net by the actual work-related time and shows you what an hour of your life is really worth - often sobering much less than the contractual hourly rate.

The commute costs are realistically mapped. Depending on the mode of transport and distance, the tool factors in the cost of commuting, and home-office days lower it accordingly. On top come other work costs such as work clothing, meals or training that you pay yourself from your net and that your employer never sees. In the end there is a net after ALL costs that hits the truth far more closely than the payslip.

A dedicated view shows the employer cost. Your gross is not what you cost the company - on top come the employer contributions to social insurance. This figure is useful in salary negotiations and makes visible how much is lost between what you cost and what reaches you. A job comparison contrasts two offers so you look not only at the gross but at the real net per hour.

The tax calculation uses the protected formulas of the Werkzeu.ge tax engine and runs server-side; your inputs are processed for this but not permanently stored. The result is an honest orientation, not a binding payslip and not tax advice - your actual tax deduction depends on further personal factors. For the pure net figure there is also the classic net salary calculator.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference from a normal net salary calculator?

An ordinary calculator stops at net. This tool goes further: it also deducts commute and hidden work costs and divides the result by your actual working time including overtime and commuting. That gives you the true hourly wage and a net after all costs, not just the plain payslip figure.

How is the true hourly wage calculated?

The tool takes your net after all costs and divides it by the total work-related time in the year. That includes not only contract hours but also unpaid overtime, commute time and daily prep. The result is often well below the contractual hourly rate.

Why are the employer costs interesting?

Your gross salary is not what you cost the company. The employer additionally pays its share of social insurance. This total cost is a strong argument in salary negotiations and shows how much lies between your cost value to the company and what reaches you net.

Are the tax values current for 2026?

Yes. The calculation uses the Werkzeu.ge tax engine with 2026 values, including the contribution assessment ceilings for health and pension insurance. This correctly caps social contributions at higher salaries instead of simply extrapolating linearly.

Is my salary data stored?

The tax calculation runs server-side because the tax formulas are protected, but your inputs are only processed for the calculation and not permanently stored. The result is an honest orientation and not a binding payslip or tax advice.
