Convert Storage Sizes — KB, MB, GB, TB
The Storage Calculator converts digital storage units instantly: Byte, Kilobyte, Megabyte, Gigabyte, Terabyte, and beyond. Including the distinction between decimal (SI) and binary (IEC) prefixes.
1000 vs. 1024 — What Is the Difference?
Hard drive manufacturers and internet providers use decimal prefixes (1 KB = 1,000 bytes, 1 MB = 1,000,000 bytes). Operating systems like Windows use binary prefixes (1 KiB = 1,024 bytes, 1 MiB = 1,048,576 bytes). That's why a "500 GB" hard drive shows only about 465 GiB in Windows. Our calculator displays both values side by side.
Storage Units at a Glance
- 1 KB — 1,000 bytes (decimal) / 1 KiB — 1,024 bytes (binary)
- 1 MB — 1,000,000 bytes / 1 MiB — 1,048,576 bytes
- 1 GB — 1,000,000,000 bytes / 1 GiB — 1,073,741,824 bytes
- 1 TB — 1,000,000,000,000 bytes / 1 TiB — 1,099,511,627,776 bytes

- Music track (MP3) — approx. 3–7 MB (3–5 minutes, 128–320 kbps)
- Full HD video (1080p) — approx. 2–4 GB per hour
- 4K video — approx. 10–20 GB per hour
- PC game — 30–150 GB typical
- Word document — 20–500 KB (without images)
USB Drive, SSD, or HDD?
A 64 GB USB drive holds about 16,000 photos or 15 hours of Full HD video. A 1 TB SSD offers space for approximately 250,000 photos. External hard drives (HDD) are available up to 20 TB — ideal for backups. For everyday use: SSD is faster, HDD is cheaper per gigabyte.
