We turn tax jargon into plain words for orientation, not as tax advice. For your specific case, a tax advisor stays the right address. Not legally binding.

Tax Advisor Demystifier

Your tax advisor's invoice reads like a secret code: object value, tenth rate, Table A. The tax advisor demystifier translates it into plain language, checks against the StBVV fee schedule whether the charges are plausible, and tells you honestly what you can do yourself - and whether you even need a tax advisor.

What Tax Advisor Demystifier does

Tax advisors do not bill freely by feel but according to the tax advisor fee regulation, StBVV for short. That is good because it prevents arbitrariness - and bad because it makes the invoice unreadable for laypeople. The demystifier takes the regulation apart and explains, position by position, what you pay how much for.

The core of every fee is the object value. It is usually based on a reference figure like your income or your turnover. From the object value, one of the StBVV tables yields the full fee. The demystifier knows the relevant tables - Table A (advisory table under Section 13 StBVV) and Table B (closing table under Section 14 StBVV) - and assigns your case to the right bracket.

Over the full fee lies the tenth rate, also called the frame fee. For many services the advisor may bill within a range, for example from 1/10 to 6/10. The middle of the range is the so-called middle fee, considered appropriate when your case is average. The demystifier shows you the range and where your advisor's invoice sits within it - so you can tell whether it was billed at the upper end.

The tool works through common services concretely: the income tax return, the cash-basis profit statement, the annual accounts, ongoing bookkeeping, VAT advance returns. For each it shows the matching table, the typical tenth range and the plausible amount, so you can hold your real invoice against it.

Just as important is the honest question: what can you do yourself? The demystifier tells you which tasks are well doable yourself with a little familiarization - a simple employee return, a basic EUER, gathering documents - and where an advisor genuinely creates value, such as complex structuring, tax audits or voluntary disclosures. Not a sales pitch, but a sober assessment.

Finally comes the fundamental question of whether a tax advisor is worth it for you at all. For an employee with straightforward circumstances the cost is often higher than the benefit; for a self-employed person with ongoing bookkeeping and deadlines the calculation looks different. The demystifier helps you make this judgement with real numbers instead of gut feeling.

The StBVV values in the tool are simplified to the most important tiers and serve as orientation. The demystifier is neither tax nor legal advice and does not replace a binding fee review. It gives you the vocabulary and the ballpark figures to talk to your tax advisor about the invoice on equal terms.

Frequently asked questions

How does a tax advisor calculate fees?

According to the tax advisor fee regulation (StBVV). From an object value - usually your income or turnover - a fee table yields the full fee. A tenth rate within a permissible range is then applied to it. The demystifier retraces this path for common services.

What is the object value?

The object value is the reference figure on which the fee is based. Depending on the service, that is for example the sum of your income, your annual turnover or the balance-sheet total. From the object value the full fee is read off the StBVV table. The demystifier assigns your value to the right bracket.

What does the tenth rate on my invoice mean?

For many services the tax advisor may bill within a frame range, for example from 1/10 to 6/10 of the full fee. The middle counts as the middle fee and is appropriate for average cases. If your advisor bills at the upper end, the effort should justify it. The demystifier shows you where your invoice sits.

What is the difference between Table A and Table B?

Table A is the advisory table under Section 13 StBVV and applies to advisory work like the tax return. Table B is the closing table under Section 14 StBVV and applies to preparing accounts like the balance sheet. Both assign a full fee to an object value, but at different levels.

Can I do my tax return myself?

With straightforward circumstances - employee with wages, a few work-related expenses, donations - the return is well doable yourself with a little familiarization, for example via ELSTER. With self-employment, rental, foreign ties or complex structuring, a tax advisor often adds real value. The demystifier helps you gauge this.

Is the tool a binding fee review?

No. The demystifier uses simplified StBVV tiers and serves as orientation, not as legal or tax advice. For a binding review of your invoice or a dispute over the amount, contact the tax advisor chamber or an independent advisor. The tool does give you the ballpark and the vocabulary for the conversation.
