What Mini-ELSTER Wizard does
The German tax return rarely fails on the maths and mostly on the preparation: which forms are even mandatory for me? Which documents must I collect? Am I obliged to file, and by when? The Mini-ELSTER Wizard answers exactly these questions, so you do not discover halfway through the ELSTER form that half of it is missing.
The core is the form selection. With a few questions about your situation - employed, self-employed, rental, capital gains, pension - the wizard determines which forms you need. Anlage N for employees and work-related expenses, Anlage S for the self-employed, Anlage V for rental income, Anlage KAP for capital gains, Anlage R for pensions. For each it briefly explains what belongs in it.
From your forms the wizard derives a personal document checklist. Wage tax certificate, bank statements, tradesperson invoices, donation receipts, evidence for the commuting allowance and home office - you see exactly what to gather before sitting down at the form. That saves the typical interruptions mid-return.
A deadline check is included. The wizard checks whether you are obliged to file (mandatory assessment) or filing voluntarily, and names the applicable filing deadline. It accounts for the longer deadline with a tax advisor and reminds you of late-filing penalties when it gets tight - so no avoidable surcharge arises.
So you know what you are working towards, the wizard estimates your expected refund or back payment. From gross wage, withheld wage tax, work-related expenses and special expenses like donations or Riester, a rough forecast emerges. It is not an exact calculation, but it gives you a sense of whether the effort is worth it - and it almost always is.
The wizard covers not only income tax but also the common neighbours: the VAT advance return for the self-employed, trade tax and the cash-basis profit statement EUER. For each it explains who has to file it and what is involved, without burying you in details that do not concern you.
Important: the Mini-ELSTER Wizard is a preparation tool. It needs no ELSTER certificate and transmits nothing to the tax office - the actual filing you still do yourself via Mein ELSTER. It does not replace tax advice; it makes sure you start the return well prepared and complete.

Who needs this
Frequently asked questions
Do I need an ELSTER certificate for the wizard?
No. The Mini-ELSTER Wizard is a preparation tool and needs no certificate and no login. It helps you clarify which forms and documents you need and by when to file. The actual submission you then do yourself via Mein ELSTER with your certificate.
Which forms do I need for my tax return?
It depends on your income. Employees need Anlage N, the self-employed Anlage S, landlords Anlage V, capital gains add Anlage KAP and pensions Anlage R. The wizard determines from your details which forms are mandatory for you.
By when do I have to file my tax return?
For mandatory assessment a statutory filing deadline applies; with a tax advisor it extends significantly. For voluntary filing you have several years. The wizard checks which case applies to you, names the deadline and warns of late-filing penalties when it gets tight.
How accurate is the refund estimate?
It is a rough orientation, not an exact calculation. From gross wage, withheld wage tax and your main expenses a tendency emerges of whether you rather get a refund or pay back. The exact amount is only fixed after the complete return and in the tax assessment.
Does the wizard also help with the VAT advance return?
Yes. Besides income tax the wizard also explains the VAT advance return, trade tax and the cash-basis profit statement EUER. It tells you who has to file them and what is involved, so the self-employed and traders are well prepared too.
Does the wizard replace a tax advisor?
No. The Mini-ELSTER Wizard prepares you in a structured way but is not tax advice. For complex cases, planning questions or uncertainties about classification, your tax advisor remains the right contact. For the typical employee return, though, the wizard gives you everything to get started yourself.
