ELSTER Preparation Assistant

Before you sit down at ELSTER comes the real work: which annexes do you need, which documents must be gathered, and by when does it all have to be filed? The ELSTER Preparation Assistant builds an interactive checklist for income, VAT, trade, corporate tax and the EÜR - with an annex finder by life situation, a document list by return type and a deadline timeline with the right sections.

What ELSTER Preparation Assistant does

Most people fail at the tax return not at the filling in but at the preparation. You sit down, realize the wage tax certificate is missing, gather the insurance contributions, are unsure whether you need Annex V or KAP, and put it off again. The ELSTER Preparation Assistant clears exactly this hurdle: it tells you in advance what you need so you can get through in one go.

The heart of it is the annex finder. You state your life situation - employed, self-employed, renting out property, with capital income, with children, with a pension - and the assistant shows which annexes are mandatory for you and which optional. Annex N for employment income, Annex S for the self-employed, Annex G for trade, Annex V for rental, Annex KAP for capital income, plus insurance and special expenses. Instead of digging through dozens of forms you see only the ones that concern you.

Each return type comes with a document list. For income tax that means the wage tax certificate, insurance contributions, donation receipts, tradesperson invoices and so on. For the EÜR the income and expense receipts. For VAT the input tax documents. The assistant ticks off with you what is already there and what is still missing so a document does not go missing mid-ELSTER.

The deadline timeline is the insurance against nasty surprises. The assistant shows the filing deadlines under Section 149 AO, the possible late surcharge under Section 152 AO - at least 25 EUR per started month of delay, at least 0.25% of the assessed tax - and the interest under Section 233a AO. This tells you what it costs to be late and whether engaging a tax advisor pays off just for the longer deadline.

Two practical helpers come on top: the document retrieval explainer shows how to pull the data stored at the tax office - such as wage data and insurance contributions - directly into ELSTER instead of typing it. And the pre-submission validation runs through the typical sources of error before you submit so ELSTER does not throw you back with an error code.

The assistant runs protected, your entries stay in your control. It is a structured preparation, not a filling service and not tax advice. Which annexes are mandatory in a given case and how a specific item is to be classified for tax can be complex - when in doubt the tax advisor helps. But for an orderly start to the tax return the preparation assistant is exactly the missing piece.

Frequently asked questions

Which annexes do I need for my tax return?

That depends on your life situation. Employees need Annex N, the self-employed Annex S, landlords Annex V, with capital income Annex KAP is added, plus insurance expenses, special expenses and the child annex depending on the case. The annex finder shows you exactly the annexes that are mandatory or sensible for you.

By when do I have to file the tax return?

The filing deadlines follow Section 149 AO. Without a tax advisor an earlier deadline applies than with an advisor, who has a considerably longer deadline. The assistant shows you the concrete timeline and the consequences if you are late.

What does a late filing cost?

The late surcharge under Section 152 AO is at least 25 EUR per started month of delay and at least 0.25% of the assessed tax. Interest under Section 233a AO can be added. The assistant makes these costs visible so you can plan for them.

What is the document retrieval?

With document retrieval you pull the data already stored at the tax office - such as wage data, pensions and insurance contributions - directly into your ELSTER return instead of typing it by hand. The assistant explains how this works and what you need for it.

Does the assistant file the return for me?

No. The preparation assistant brings you to the point of submission in an orderly way - it tells you which annexes and documents you need and what to watch for regarding deadlines. The filling in and submission you then do in ELSTER yourself.

Does the assistant replace the tax advisor?

No. Which annexes are mandatory in a given case and how a specific item is to be classified can be complex. The assistant structures your preparation but does not replace individual tax advice. When in doubt the tax advisor helps.
