We translate cryptic ELSTER error codes into plain words as help, not tax advice. What your Finanzamt actually needs is told most reliably by ELSTER itself. Not legally binding.

ELSTER Error Decoder

ELSTER throws a cryptic error code at you and aborts the transmission - and you have no idea what ERIC is actually trying to tell you. The ELSTER Error Decoder is a searchable directory of the most common error messages with plain-language explanations, concrete fix steps and the relevant sections. Error code in, plain text out.

What ELSTER Error Decoder does

The tax return is done, you click submit, and instead of the confirmation comes an error with a number that looks like a password. ELSTER and its core component ERIC report problems in a language made for case officers, not for humans. The ELSTER Error Decoder translates these messages back into something understandable so you know what went wrong and how to fix it.

The directory covers the typical error classes. First there are validation errors: a mandatory field is empty, a value implausible, a date wrongly formatted. Then the certificate and authentication errors: the certificate has expired, the password is wrong, the login fails. And finally the pure transmission errors where the connection to the tax office hangs. For each of these classes the decoder provides the matching explanation.

For every error code you get three things: an explanation in normal language of what the error means, concrete fix suggestions of what you can do now, and where useful a reference to the relevant legal basis. Instead of searching the ELSTER forum aimlessly, you go straight to the likely cause and the next sensible step.

The search is especially useful. You do not need to know the error code exactly - type part of the message, a keyword or the number, and the decoder shows you the matching entries. That helps precisely when ELSTER only gives you a chunk of text and you do not know which part of it is the actual code.

The decoder also explains the transfer ticket - the receipt number you get after a successful transmission, which in case of doubt is your proof to the tax office. Anyone who knows what a transfer ticket is and where it appears saves a lot of trouble if a transmission is later questioned.

Everything runs protected, no tax data is transmitted - you only enter the error code or keyword. The decoder is a reference work that explains the most common cases, but it cannot cover every exotic edge case and does not replace tax advice in legally tricky situations. For everyday frustration with ELSTER it is exactly the right tool.

Frequently asked questions

What is an ERIC error?

ERIC is the core component behind ELSTER that checks and transmits your data. An ERIC error means this component reported a problem - for example with validation, the certificate or the transmission. The decoder explains which of these causes applies to your code.

Why is my tax return not transmitted?

Usually one of three reasons is behind it: a validation error because a mandatory field is empty or a value implausible, a certificate problem because your ELSTER certificate has expired or the password is wrong, or a transmission error in the connection. Enter the error code into the decoder to find the specific cause.

Do I need to know the exact error code?

No. The search also works with part of the message or a keyword. That helps when ELSTER only gives you a longer chunk of text and you are unsure which part is the actual code.

What is a transfer ticket?

The transfer ticket is the receipt number you get after a successful transmission to ELSTER. It is your proof that and when the return reached the tax office. Keep it in case a transmission is later questioned.

Does the decoder cover all errors?

It covers the most common cases that occur in everyday use of ELSTER. Very rare or exotic edge cases may be missing. For legally tricky situations you should also ask a tax advisor - the decoder does not replace tax advice.

Is my tax data transmitted?

No. You only enter the error code or a keyword. No tax or personal data leaves your device, the search runs protected.
