Company Car Calculator

A company car feels like a gift until the first payslip arrives. The Company Car Calculator shows you the taxable benefit of your company car for 2026, whether the 1 % rule or the logbook is cheaper, and what the car really costs you in net pay each month. With the rules for e-cars and hybrids, the commute, one-off payments and your employer's view.

What Company Car Calculator does

If you may also use the company car privately, the tax office treats that as wages. The value of this private use is called the taxable benefit (geldwerter Vorteil). It is added to your salary, you pay wage tax and social contributions on it, but it is never paid out. That is why your net pay drops although you receive no extra money. The calculator makes this visible: you see your net pay with and without the car and the amount the car actually costs you each month.

The standard case is the 1 % rule from § 8 (2) EStG and § 6 (1) No. 4 EStG: each month 1 % of the gross list price is counted, meaning the new-car price including extras and VAT, rounded down to full 100 euros. That applies to used cars too. If you drive the car to work, 0.03 % per kilometre of distance is added. If you are in the office fewer than 15 days a month, the per-trip method at 0.002 % per trip is often cheaper, for at most 180 trips a year. The calculator picks the cheaper way automatically and tells you what you need to do for it.

Electric cars and plug-in hybrids are valued lower. For pure e-cars only a quarter of the list price counts if the price is below the cap: 60,000 euros for cars acquired up to the end of 2023, 70,000 euros from 2024 to June 2025, and 100,000 euros for cars acquired from July 2025. More expensive e-cars and hybrids with enough electric range or at most 50 g CO2 per km count at half. Which range is needed also depends on the acquisition date. The calculator only asks what it needs and shows you the rule that applies to your car.

The alternative is the logbook. Then the list price does not matter; what counts is the real share of your private trips and commute in the total costs of the car. With few private trips, or an expensive car that is cheap to run, this often saves a lot. The calculator puts both methods side by side, marks the cheaper one and tells you the private share above which the logbook stops paying off. For the tax office to accept it, the logbook must be kept properly: promptly, completely and in bound form. What exactly it needs is listed in the calculator, and our logbook tool helps you keep it.

The details are covered too: a monthly usage fee, or fuel you pay yourself, lowers the benefit. A one-off payment towards the purchase price is spread or set off in the following years. If your employer taxes the commute at a flat 15 %, that part is free of social contributions but reduces your work expenses. You may still claim the commuter allowance of 0.38 euros per kilometre in your tax return despite the company car. And you see what your employer pays on top in social contributions and flat tax.

If you are self-employed and drive a business car, a separate card compares the withdrawal under the 1 % rule with the cost share from a logbook. It checks the 50 % threshold for business property and the non-deductible part for trips to your business. From there you go straight on to our fleet tool and the EÜR assistant.

All figures are guide values to help you understand and prepare, not tax advice. What counts is your payslip and your tax assessment. The calculation uses the 2026 wage tax, and the current draft values for 2027. What you type stays in your browser.

Features

1 % rule and logbook side by side

Both methods in one table, the cheaper one marked, plus the private share above which the logbook no longer pays off.

E-cars and hybrids valued correctly

0.25 % and 0.5 % with the price caps of 60,000, 70,000 and 100,000 euros and the range rules by acquisition date.

What the car costs you in net pay

Net pay with and without the company car using the same wage tax calculation as our gross-net calculator, as a monthly and yearly table.

Commute, trips home, flat tax

0.03 % or 0.002 % per trip, trips home with a second household, 15 % flat tax and the commuter allowance in your tax return.

The employer's view

Employer social contributions and flat tax on the benefit, with and without the flat-rate option.

For the self-employed

Withdrawal under 1 % against the cost share, the 50 % threshold for business property and the share under § 4 (5a) EStG.

How it works

  1. 1

    Enter the car

Gross list price, drive and, for an e-car or hybrid, when it was acquired. Your employer knows the list price.

  2. 2

    Add commute and salary

Distance, office days per week, gross salary and tax class. That is all the calculator needs for the net pay.

  3. 3

    Add logbook figures

If you know the car costs and kilometres, you see both methods compared.

  4. 4

    Read and print the result

Check the net difference, work expenses and employer costs, then print the summary and talk it through with payroll.

Who needs this

→Employees offered a company car who want to know what is left in net pay.
→Anyone choosing between an electric car, hybrid or combustion car as a company car.
→High-mileage drivers with few private trips checking whether a logbook pays off.
→Part-time and home-office workers who rarely go to the office.
→Self-employed people with a car in their business property.

Frequently asked questions

What is the 1 % rule for a car costing 45,990 euros?

The list price is rounded down to 45,900 euros, and 1 % of that is 459 euros a month. With a 20 km commute, 0.03 % per km is added, which is 275.40 euros. Together that is 734.40 euros of taxable benefit a month, on which you pay tax and social contributions. A guide value; your payslip is what counts.

Does the 0.25 % rule apply to my electric car?

If it is a pure e-car and the list price does not exceed the cap: 100,000 euros for cars acquired from July 2025, 70,000 euros from 2024 to June 2025, 60,000 euros before that. Above the cap, half counts (0.5 %). What matters is when the company bought or leased the car.

When does a logbook pay off?

Usually with few private trips, a high list price or a car that is already depreciated. The calculator shows the private share up to which the logbook is cheaper. Mind the effort: a logbook must be kept promptly and without gaps for a whole year.

Can I still claim the commuter allowance with a company car?

Yes. The commuter allowance of 0.38 euros per kilometre also applies with a company car, without the 4,500 euro cap. If your employer taxed the commute at a flat 15 %, that amount is deducted.

What does the 15 % flat tax do?

Your employer can tax the commute benefit at a flat 15 %, up to the commuter allowance amount (§ 40 (2) EStG). That part is free of social contributions, and usually the employer pays the tax. In return your work expenses drop by the same amount.

Does the calculator replace payroll or a tax adviser?

No. The calculator helps you understand your payslip and prepare the talk with your employer. The figures are guide values. What counts is the payslip and the tax assessment, and for your individual case a tax adviser or a wage tax help association is the right place.
