What Church Exit Helper does
Leaving the church is a fundamental right: religious freedom under Articles 4 and 140 of the Basic Law also includes the freedom to no longer belong to a religious community. The exit is a purely civil act you declare to an authority - you do not have to contact the church itself for it. The helper walks you through the process without lecturing you on why you take it.
The confusing part is jurisdiction, because it is a matter for the states. In most federal states you declare the exit at the registry office, in some at the district court, in others at your choice. The fee differs too: some states charge a small amount, others allow the exit for free. The helper asks for your place of residence and names exactly the right office and the fee due there, so you do not end up at the wrong door.
For the declaration you usually need a valid ID card or passport, often the statement of your denomination and, depending on the authority, further proof such as the baptism certificate or the marriage certificate. The helper assembles the right document list so your appointment works first time and you do not have to make a second round.
The most tangible effect is financial: church tax. Depending on the federal state it is eight or nine percent of your income tax and is levied under Section 51a of the Income Tax Act. Over a working life that adds up to a substantial sum. The helper calculates, based on your income, how much church tax you pay monthly and annually - and thus how much the exit saves you.
Timing matters. The exit generally does not work retroactively but takes effect from the month of the declaration or the following month, depending on the federal state. It can take a little while for the change to reach your employer via the ELStAM system. The helper explains from when the church tax falls away so you set the right expectation for the first church-tax-free payslip.
The exit also has non-tax consequences you should know: certain church services, offices or possibly a church funeral may be affected. The helper names these points factually so you make an informed decision without anyone trying to give you a bad conscience.
Everything runs in your browser, your entries stay on the device. The helper generates the exit declaration as a basis and does not replace the binding information from your authority. But it saves you the searching and makes sure you arrive at the appointment with the right papers and a clear figure in mind.
