What Moving Address Change Pack does
The real stress of moving only starts once the furniture is in place. Within 14 days you have to register your new address at the residents’ office, or face a fine of up to 1,000 euros under the German registration act. And that is just the start: bank, health insurer, insurance policies, electricity, internet, the broadcasting fee, employer, subscriptions - every one wants to know, and each has its own deadline. The generator turns that chaos into a checklist you can tick off.
You start by picking your move type: single, couple, family with children, self-employed, from abroad, within the same city, student, retiree, with a dog, with a car, homeowner or shared flat. Depending on your choice, the tool shows exactly the entities relevant to you. A student gets the BAföG office and semester ticket, a family gets school, daycare and the family benefits fund, someone with a car gets vehicle registration and the insurer’s regional class.
Every entry comes with the essentials: the statutory deadline (for example 14 days at the registration office under Section 17 BMG), the relevant legal basis, a reference field for your customer or policy number, and a concrete tip. The electricity entry reminds you to read the meter on moving day and mentions the special cancellation right; the internet entry tells you to act early so you are not offline for weeks.
The landlord confirmation is especially important. Without it you cannot register at all, and your landlord is legally obliged to issue it within two weeks - or face a fine themselves. The generator explains what it must contain and reminds you in good time to request it.
On top of that there are template letters you fill with your data and export as a pack, plus a deadline tracker showing what is overdue, urgent or still relaxed. The postal forwarding order is ideally set up five business days before the move so no mail gets lost - the list keeps that in mind for you too.
A dedicated section handles tax: for a job-related move - a new job or shortening your commute by at least an hour - many moving costs are deductible as income-related expenses. The tool shows you what counts. This is not tax advice, but a pointer that can save you real money at year’s end. Everything runs in your browser and your address data stays with you.

Who needs this
Frequently asked questions
How long do I have to register my move?
Under Section 17 of the German registration act you must register at the residents’ office within 14 days of moving in. Missing the deadline risks a fine of up to 1,000 euros. Book an appointment online early.
What is a landlord confirmation?
It is your landlord’s written confirmation that you have moved in. Without it you cannot register. Your landlord must issue it within two weeks, or face a fine themselves under Section 19 BMG.
Which entities do I have to notify?
That depends on your move type. Mandatory are the registration office, the broadcasting fee and, when changing municipality, vehicle registration. On top come bank, health insurer, insurers, electricity, gas, internet, employer and, depending on your situation, school, BAföG office or immigration office.
Can I deduct moving costs from tax?
For a job-related move, often yes - for example if you move for a new job or shorten your commute by at least an hour. Then many costs count as income-related expenses. The tool shows you what qualifies; for details ask your tax office or an adviser.
When should I set up mail forwarding?
Ideally about five business days before the move, so no mail gets lost. The postal forwarding order can be set up online and runs for either six or twelve months.
Do my address details stay private?
Yes. The generator runs entirely in your browser. Your addresses, data and letters are not sent to a server, they stay on your device.
