What Formal Address Generator does
The right form of address in Germany is a status signal, whether you like it or not. Whoever addresses an office holder, an academic authority or a court incorrectly quickly comes across as careless, and precisely in the letters where a serious impression counts. The problem is that the rules are scattered and full of special cases: title stacking, official titles, the question of whether the title belongs in the address block or the salutation. The formal address generator gathers this in one place.
At its core is a comprehensive title database. Academic degrees like Dr. and Prof. Dr., their combinations and the question of how to stack and abbreviate them are stored. The generator shows you which part belongs in the address block and which in the salutation, because they are not the same: in the address block the full title stands, in the salutation the doctorate usually drops for a professor.
Equally important are the institution formats. An authority, a court, a company or an association are addressed differently, and the salutation depends on whether you address a specific person, a department or the institution as a whole. The generator knows these formats and assembles address block, subject zone and salutation to match, even when you know no name but only a function.
To get started there are presets for the typical cases, so you do not begin from scratch every time. You pick, say, the authority or company case, the generator fills the matching defaults and an example, and you adapt name, gender, institution and department. The greeting and closing formula come right along, tuned to the formality of the occasion.
A live preview shows you what the finished address looks like while you type. So you see immediately whether the title stacking is plausible and whether address block and salutation fit together. No trial and error in the real letter, no embarrassing mistake that only surfaces once the letter is already sent.
The generator sees itself as a companion to the actual letter: the correct address is the first impression, the rest of your letter you design yourself or with a letter template. Together with the DIN 5008 letter wizard you have form and courtesy covered and need not think about the bureaucratic etiquette part any longer.

Frequently asked questions
How do I address a professor with a doctorate?
In the address block the full title usually stands, so "Herrn Prof. Dr. ...". In the salutation the doctorate usually drops for a professor, so you write "Sehr geehrter Herr Professor ...". The generator shows you both forms separately so you do not mix them up.
How do I address an authority without a name?
Then you address the institution or the responsible department and use a neutral form in the salutation like "Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren". The generator knows the matching institution formats and assembles address block and salutation correctly, even without a specific contact.
Does the title belong in the address block or salutation?
In both, but differently. In the address block the title stands in full, in the salutation often shortened or partly dropped. This very distinction is the most common source of error. The generator separates the two cleanly and shows you the correct form for each.
Can I also address courts and companies with it?
Yes. The generator covers authorities, courts, companies and associations. For each institution type there is the matching address and salutation format, so your letter begins formally correct no matter who it goes to.
Does the generator create the whole letter?
No, it handles address block, salutation and closing formula, meaning the etiquette part. The content of your letter you write yourself or with a letter template. Together with the DIN 5008 letter wizard for the form you have the formal frame fully covered.
