The right form of address in Germany is a status signal, whether you like it or not. Whoever addresses an office holder, an academic authority or a court incorrectly quickly comes across as careless, and precisely in the letters where a serious impression counts. The problem is that the rules are scattered and full of special cases: title stacking, official titles, the question of whether the title belongs in the address block or the salutation. The formal address generator gathers this in one place.

At its core is a comprehensive title database. Academic degrees like Dr. and Prof. Dr., their combinations and the question of how to stack and abbreviate them are stored. The generator shows you which part belongs in the address block and which in the salutation, because they are not the same: in the address block the full title stands, in the salutation the doctorate usually drops for a professor.

Equally important are the institution formats. An authority, a court, a company or an association are addressed differently, and the salutation depends on whether you address a specific person, a department or the institution as a whole. The generator knows these formats and assembles address block, subject zone and salutation to match, even when you know no name but only a function.

To get started there are presets for the typical cases, so you do not begin from scratch every time. You pick, say, the authority or company case, the generator fills the matching defaults and an example, and you adapt name, gender, institution and department. The greeting and closing formula come right along, tuned to the formality of the occasion.
