What Payment Due Calculator does
Payment terms sound trivial until an invoice goes unpaid. Suddenly every date matters: when is the customer in default? Which interest rate applies? How much can you demand without overreaching? The payment due calculator does the maths for you and lays out every step with the matching statute, so your dunning letter is not written into the blue.
It starts with the due date. You enter the invoice date and payment term - either as a number of days from the invoice date or as a fixed due date. Optionally you add when the customer received the invoice, because the 30-day rule under Section 286(3) BGB depends on receipt. If you agreed a cash discount, the tool also computes the discount window and the reduced amount payable.
The default start date is where most people slip. For B2B with an agreed term, default begins the day after the due date, calendar-determined under Section 286(2) BGB, without any reminder. For consumers (B2C) you need either a reminder or the 30-day automatic under Section 286(3) BGB, which only kicks in if the invoice carries the default notice. The calculator distinguishes these cases and shows you the right date.
Once the conditions are clear come the late-payment interest rates under Section 288 BGB. For consumer transactions it is five percentage points above the base rate, for transactions without consumer involvement nine points. The base rate changes every six months, and that is where it gets nasty: if your default period crosses a cutoff date, different rates apply to the sub-periods. The calculator uses the built-in Bundesbank base-rate series and computes segment-exact, day-exact per act/365. If you want to set your own base rate, you can.
Two things easily overlooked are built in. Section 271a BGB caps long payment terms: over 60 days in B2B (over 30 days for public-sector clients) is only valid if expressly agreed and not grossly unfair. And the limitation period under Sections 195, 199 BGB runs three years from the end of the year the claim arose. The calculator flags both so no claim quietly slips away.
Finally you can export the due date as an ICS file for your calendar, or hand it to the deadline guardian so a reminder nudges you in time. Everything runs in your browser, no amounts and no customer data leave your device. This is not legal advice, it is a calculating servant - but one that knows the statutes.
Features
Due date to the day
Payment term as days from the invoice date or a fixed date. Customer receipt is factored in for the 30-day rule.
Default start per Section 286
B2B starts the day after the due date without a reminder, B2C via the 30-day automatic or a reminder. The calculator separates them cleanly.
Late interest per Section 288
Base rate plus five points for consumers, plus nine points in B2B. Day-exact act/365, segment-exact across base-rate changes.
Bundesbank base-rate series
The half-yearly base rates are built in and applied automatically per period. Your own base rate is optionally possible.
Cash discount included
Enter the discount rate and window, the reduced amount payable and the discount end date appear instantly.
Section 271a and limitation
A flag when the payment term breaches Section 271a BGB limits, plus the limitation end date per Sections 195, 199 BGB.
ICS export & deadline guardian
Export the due date as a calendar entry or hand it to the deadline guardian so a reminder nudges you in time.
How it works
- 1
Enter the invoice data
Enter the invoice amount, invoice date and optionally the customer receipt date.
- 2
Pick term and business type
Set days or a fixed date and choose B2B or B2C. That drives the default start and the interest spread.
- 3
Check discount and base rate
Optionally add a cash discount. The base rate comes automatically from the Bundesbank series but can be overridden.
- 4
Read off the results
Due date, discount window, default start, day-exact interest and limitation are laid out separately.
- 5
Add to your calendar
Export the due date as ICS or hand it to the deadline guardian so the deadline is not missed.

Frequently asked questions
From when is my customer in default?
For transactions between businesses (B2B) with an agreed term, default begins the day after the due date, calendar-determined under Section 286(2) BGB, with no reminder. For consumers you need a reminder or the 30-day automatic under Section 286(3) BGB, which only applies if the invoice contains the default notice.
How high is the late-payment interest?
Under Section 288 BGB it is five percentage points above the base rate for consumer transactions and nine points above for transactions without a consumer. The calculator takes the base rate in force and computes to the day, including across half-yearly base-rate changes with different rates per sub-period.
What is the base rate and where does it come from?
The base rate under Section 247 BGB is set by the Deutsche Bundesbank twice a year, on 1 January and 1 July. It is the basis for late-payment interest. The calculator has the series built in and applies the matching rate for each period. You can override it with your own value.
Does the calculator handle cash discount?
Yes. Enter the discount rate and window and the calculator shows the reduced amount payable and the last date the discount applies. So you can see at a glance whether paying early is worth it.
When does my claim become time-barred?
The standard limitation period under Sections 195, 199 BGB is three years, running from the end of the year in which the claim arose. So a 2026 invoice is normally time-barred on 31 December 2029. The calculator points out this date.
What does Section 271a say about long payment terms?
Section 271a BGB caps very long payment terms. Between businesses, terms over 60 days are only valid if expressly agreed and not grossly unfair. For public-sector clients the limit is 30 days. The calculator warns when your term exceeds these limits.
