What VAT Calculator does
VAT is simple in theory: a fixed percentage on the net price. In practice it gets fiddly every single time, because sometimes you go from net to gross, sometimes back again, and because 19% and 7% jump around depending on the product or service. That is exactly what the VAT calculator is for: type an amount, pick the direction and the rate, and the rest happens live.
The heart of it is the two-way calculation. Got a net price and want to know what ends up on the invoice? Net to gross. Got a gross amount from a receipt and want to pull out the VAT it contains, say for your advance VAT return? Gross to net. Both directions show net, tax amount and gross cleanly separated, so you can copy exactly the figure you need.
The rates are not arbitrary. 19% is the standard rate that applies to most goods and services. 7% is the reduced rate for everyday essentials like groceries, books, newspapers or local public transport. Since 1 January 2026, restaurant food is back under the 7% rate while drinks stay at 19%. The calculator keeps these cases ready as one-tap presets so you never have to look them up.
For anything outside the grid there is the free rate. Old invoices with the pandemic-era 16%, foreign rates, edge cases - just type in the percentage you need and the maths still checks out. No hard-coded assumptions about your situation.
If you are self-employed, the small-business question under Section 19 of the German VAT Act is often the real sticking point. Anyone below the turnover thresholds charges no VAT at all and instead adds a short note to the invoice. The calculator reminds you of this rule so you do not accidentally show tax you never have to remit - or forget that your customer is expecting the reduced rate.
Everything runs entirely in your browser. No amount leaves your device, nothing is sent to a server, nothing is stored unless you want it to be. That makes it fast, works offline, and is exactly as data-frugal as a tax calculator should be. No signup, no account, no newsletter to unsubscribe from later.

Who needs this
Frequently asked questions
How do I go from gross to net?
Select the gross-to-net direction and the matching rate. At 19% the calculator divides the gross amount by 1.19, at 7% by 1.07. It shows the VAT contained in it separately.
When does 7% apply instead of 19%?
The reduced 7% rate applies to everyday essentials like groceries, books, newspapers and local transport. Since 1 January 2026 restaurant food counts too, while drinks stay at 19%.
Can I enter a custom rate?
Yes. Alongside 19% and 7% there is a free rate. Just enter the percentage you need - for example old invoices at 16% or foreign rates.
What about small businesses under Section 19?
Anyone within the turnover limits of Section 19 of the VAT Act charges no VAT and notes this on the invoice. The calculator reminds you so you do not accidentally show tax you do not have to remit.
Are my amounts stored anywhere?
No. The entire calculation runs in your browser. No amount is sent to a server, nothing is stored without your action. The calculator even works offline.
Is the calculator free?
Yes, completely free and no signup. Open it right in your browser and start immediately.
