Hazmat Label Helper

Labelling dangerous goods correctly means: the right UN number, the right hazard class and the right hazard placard in the right colour. The Hazmat Label Helper looks up UN numbers, shows you the hazard class, packing group and tunnel restriction, and generates the matching ADR label to print.

What Hazmat Label Helper does

Anyone transporting dangerous goods by road cannot avoid the ADR - the European agreement on the international carriage of dangerous goods. Every substance has a UN number, belongs to a hazard class and needs the matching hazard placard, the familiar diamond-shaped label. Incorrectly labelled dangerous goods are not just a fine risk but a real danger to everyone who, in an emergency, needs to know what they are dealing with.

The Hazmat Label Helper takes the looking-up off your hands. The tool includes a database of common UN numbers - from UN1202 diesel through UN1203 petrol and UN1830 sulphuric acid to UN3481 lithium-ion batteries. You search by UN number or substance name and instantly get the hazard class, the ADR division, the packing group, the tunnel restriction and a note on whether transport documents are mandatory.

The key detail is the colour. Many believe the placard colour depends on the class number - but that is only roughly true. In reality the colour follows the division: flammable gas 2.1 is red, non-flammable gas 2.2 green, toxic gas 2.3 white, and class 4.3 substances that react dangerously with water carry a blue label. The tool knows this distinction and picks the correct colour automatically, instead of letting you walk into a classic trap.

From the data, the tool generates a label with the diamond hazard placard, the class digit and the UN number, which you can download and print directly. That gives you fast, clean labelling for packages without leafing through the ADR tables every time or grabbing a label from the drawer on a hunch.

Very important context: this tool is a work aid and reference helper, not a substitute for the binding ADR and not dangerous-goods legal advice. The colours shown are approximations of the official patterns, and striped or two-tone labels are shown simplified. For the legally compliant labelling, the exemption limits and the obligations of your specific transport, your dangerous-goods safety adviser or the current ADR is authoritative if in doubt.

Everything runs in your browser, with no account and no data transfer. For warehouse staff, shipping departments, small hauliers and trades that occasionally ship hazardous substances, the helper is a quick route to the right UN number and the matching label - a solid first orientation before things get serious.

Features

UN number database

Search by UN number or substance name and find common dangerous goods from diesel to lithium-ion batteries.

Hazard class and division

For each substance you get the class and ADR division - the basis for labelling and placard colour.

Correct colour per division

The tool picks the placard colour by division, not by class number - avoiding a classic pitfall.

Packing group and tunnel

Packing group I to III and the tunnel restriction are shown too, so you can classify the transport.

Generate and print the label

Create a diamond-shaped ADR label with class digit and UN number and download it ready to print.

Runs in the browser

No account, no data transfer. Look-up and label generation happen locally on your device.

How it works

  1. 1

    Search for the substance

Enter the UN number or the substance name to find the matching entry in the database.

  2. 2

    Check the details

Review hazard class, division, packing group and tunnel restriction and match them against your transport.

  3. 3

    Generate the label

The tool builds the hazard placard in the correct colour with class digit and UN number.

  4. 4

    Download and print

Download the label and print it - ready to apply to the package.

Who needs this

→Shipping departments labelling dangerous-goods packages correctly.
→Warehouse staff who quickly need a substance’s UN number and class.
→Small hauliers without their own dangerous-goods software.
→Trades that occasionally ship hazardous substances.
→Trainees learning and looking up ADR labelling.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the colour depend on the division, not the class?

Because one class spans several divisions with different colours. Class 2 for example: flammable gas 2.1 is red, non-flammable gas 2.2 green, toxic gas 2.3 white. Class 4 also splits, including the blue label for 4.3 on reaction with water. That is why the correct colour follows the division.

Does the tool replace the ADR?

No. The helper is a reference and work aid, but not a legally binding source. The current ADR is always authoritative. For the specific obligations of your transport, your dangerous-goods safety adviser is responsible if in doubt.

Are the shown labels official?

The labels follow the ADR patterns, but the colours are approximations. Striped or two-tone labels are shown simplified in their dominant colour. For legally compliant, standard-conforming placards, check the ADR requirements.

What does the packing group mean?

The packing group I to III indicates the degree of danger: I is highly dangerous, II medium, III low. It affects the requirements for packaging and transport. The tool shows it for each substance.

Are my searches stored?

No. The look-up and label generation run entirely in your browser. There is no account and no data transfer to a server.
