Unit Converter

Converting units sounds trivial until you are mid-recipe and need to know how many millilitres a German tablespoon holds, or someone offers you a plot of land measured in Morgen and you have no idea whether that is a lot. The unit converter covers eleven categories - length, weight, temperature, area, volume, speed, time, data, pressure, energy and power - with ten or more units each.

What sets it apart is the German grounding. Alongside metre, kilogram and Celsius it knows the old and regional units that still crop up in daily life: the German Pfund (500 g, not the imperial 453 g), the Zentner (50 kg) and Doppelzentner, the Morgen and Tagwerk for land, the Elle and Klafter, the Schoppen for wine and the German cup (150 ml) for baking.

Conversion is live and works both ways. Type a value on one side and the result appears instantly on the other - and you can just as easily edit the target side and convert backwards. Decimals with a comma or a dot, negative values, it all works. One click swaps the two units.

Temperature is a special case because it is not just multiplied by a factor. Celsius, Fahrenheit, Kelvin, Reaumur, Rankine and even the oven gas mark are converted correctly through their respective formulas. It will not let you slip below absolute zero (minus 273.15 Celsius) and warns you instead.

For the classics there are ready-made presets and a collection of German special conversions - "how much is 5 Morgen in square metres?", "how heavy is a Zentner?", "180 Celsius, which gas mark?". Conversions you use often can be saved as favourites, and a search across all categories finds any unit even when you cannot remember which category it lives in.
