What OpenTTD - Infrastructure Simulator does
OpenTTD is the evolution of one of the best economic simulators of all time. The original Transport Tycoon Deluxe by Chris Sawyer appeared in 1995, and a community later rebuilt it completely as open-source OpenTTD, improved it and extended it over years with thousands of details. The result is a game of enormous depth that is nonetheless instantly accessible.
Your job is to build a transport company. You connect towns and industries with railway lines, bus routes, truck routes, shipping lines and airports. Coal travels from the mine to the power plant, passengers commute between towns, goods flow from the factory to the shop. For every successful delivery you collect money that you pour into new routes and faster vehicles.
The appeal lies in the detail. Signals that guide trains safely across single-track lines. Stations with several platforms that avoid jams. The right moment to switch from steam to diesel and later to the electric high-speed train. OpenTTD rewards clever network planning and punishes sloppy routing with ugly traffic jams.
Over the in-game decades the technology advances: vehicles become faster, larger and more efficient, new vehicle types arrive and old ones are retired. At the same time the towns you serve well keep growing, which creates new demand. It is a cycle that can grip you for hours with no end in sight.
Controls are mouse-driven. You build and navigate by clicking, a right-click shows info, and the scroll wheel zooms over the map. The menus are full of options, but you can start small - a bus route between two towns - and work your way up to a nationwide network step by step.
OpenTTD runs entirely in your browser. No installation, no account. On start your browser loads about 36 MB of game data, then you build your first route right away. Saves are not kept after you close the game. You need a mouse and a big screen.

Frequently asked questions
What is OpenTTD?
OpenTTD is an open-source rebuild of the classic Transport Tycoon Deluxe by Chris Sawyer from 1995. A community has improved and massively extended it over years. You build a transport company using rail, road, ships and aircraft.
How do I control the game?
With the mouse: you build and navigate by clicking, a right-click shows info, and the scroll wheel zooms over the map. The menus offer many options, but you can start small with a single line.
What are signals for?
Signals control how trains travel over shared tracks and prevent collisions and jams. Placed correctly they let many trains run safely across a network - placed wrongly they bring everything to a halt.
Is there an end to the game?
Not really. OpenTTD is an open economic simulator that keeps running over in-game decades. You expand your network, modernise your fleet and watch your towns grow - for as long as you like.
Do I need to install anything?
No. OpenTTD runs as an open-source game right in the browser, with no installation and no account. On start the browser loads about 36 MB. It is hardly playable on a phone, it needs a mouse.
