Calculate Grade Average — School, Abitur, University
The Grade Average Calculator computes your weighted or unweighted grade average using the German grading system. Whether it's a school report, Abitur certificate, or university transcript — enter your grades and get the average instantly.
The German Grading System (1–6)
- 1 — sehr gut (very good) — outstanding performance
- 2 — gut (good) — well above average
- 3 — befriedigend (satisfactory) — average performance
- 4 — ausreichend (sufficient) — minimum requirements met (pass)
- 5 — mangelhaft (poor) — deficiencies present (fail)
- 6 — ungenuegend (insufficient) — minimum requirements not met
Weighted Average
Not every grade counts equally. In many schools and universities, grades are weighted differently by credit points (ECTS), weekly hours, or subject importance. An exam worth 6 ECTS counts three times as much as a seminar worth 2 ECTS. Our calculator supports individual weightings per subject.
Abitur Grade Points (15-Point System)
In the German upper secondary school (Oberstufe), grades are converted to points: 15 points (1+) down to 0 points (6). The conversion formula: grade = (17 - points) / 3. A 1.0 average corresponds to 15 points, a 4.0 average corresponds to 5 points. The calculator can also work directly with grade points.
Numerus Clausus (NC)
The NC is not a fixed cutoff but the grade average of the last admitted applicant in the previous year. An NC of 1.5 for psychology means: last semester, the last person admitted had a 1.5 average. The NC fluctuates every semester. Your grade average is your ticket — and this calculator shows you where you stand.
