Plagiarism Checker Lite

Two texts, one suspicion: how much of one is in the other? The plagiarism checker Lite compares texts via n-gram analysis, shows you a similarity percentage and highlights the matching passages directly in the text. For the honest self-check before submission, not as a replacement for the big database services.

What Plagiarism Checker Lite does

Sometimes you just want to know how similar two texts are. Did the intern reword the passage or only swap a few words? Is the revised version really new or largely the old one? The plagiarism checker Lite answers exactly this question without you uploading your texts to a foreign service.

The tool works with n-gram analysis. It breaks both texts into overlapping word sequences and looks at how many of them appear in both. From that comes a similarity percentage that makes the overlap tangible. Small rewordings show up because identical word chains become visible, no matter how the rest is rearranged.

The value alone would be half as useful, so the checker shows where the matches lie. In the highlight view the matching passages are colour-marked in both texts, so at a glance you see which parts were taken over and which are independent. You do not argue over an abstract percentage but over concrete sentences.

For a closer look there is the sentence analysis. It rates individual sentences by their similarity so the critical spots stand sorted at the top. This way you find the passages most likely to be problematic without having to compare the whole text yourself.

For more than two texts there is the matrix. It compares several texts against each other and shows the pairwise similarities in an overview - handy when you want to check a series of submissions, versions or text modules for duplication. The details section explains the metrics behind it.

Important and honest: this is a Lite tool for comparing texts you already have. It does not search the internet or any academic databases, so it cannot find a source you do not give it yourself. For the binding plagiarism check of a thesis you need the big services with billion-entry databases - this checker is the quick self-check beforehand.

Everything runs in your browser. Your texts never leave your device, there is no upload to a foreign server and no signup. That is precisely the advantage over the online services: you can compare confidential or unpublished texts too without handing them over.

Features

N-gram analysis

Breaks both texts into word sequences and detects overlaps even with small rewordings.

Similarity percentage

A clear number for how strongly two texts overlap - instead of a vague gut feeling.

Highlights in the text

Matching passages are colour-marked in both texts - you discuss sentences, not percentages.

Sentence analysis

Rates individual sentences by similarity and sorts the critical spots to the top.

Multi-text matrix

Compares more than two texts against each other and shows the pairwise similarities in an overview.

Stays confidential

No upload to a foreign server - you can compare unpublished or confidential texts without worry.

How it works

  1. 1

    Paste both texts

Paste the original text and the text to be checked into the two fields.

  2. 2

    Read the similarity

Look at the similarity percentage to gauge the rough overlap immediately.

  3. 3

    Check the highlights

Switch to the highlight view and go through the marked passages and the critical sentences.

  4. 4

    Compare several texts

For submissions or versions: use the matrix to check all texts pairwise against each other.

Who needs this

→Teachers matching a series of submissions for duplication.
→Editorial teams checking whether a text is really new or recycled.
→Authors comparing versions of their manuscript for taken-over passages.
→Anyone who wants to compare confidential texts without uploading them.

Frequently asked questions

Does the checker search the internet?

No. The plagiarism checker Lite only compares the texts you give it yourself. It has no online database and finds no sources on the web. For matching against the internet or academic databases you need the big paid services.

How does the n-gram analysis work?

Both texts are broken into overlapping word sequences. The checker counts how many of these sequences appear in both texts and computes the similarity from that. Because whole word chains are compared, even light rewordings where only single words were swapped show up.

What does the percentage mean?

It quantifies how strongly the two texts overlap in their word sequences. A high value points to a lot of taken-over text, a low one to largely independent phrasing. For the assessment you also look at the highlights, because not every overlap is a problem.

Does this replace a real plagiarism check?

No. For the binding check of a thesis you need the established services with huge source databases. The Lite checker is the quick self-check beforehand - ideal for matching your own texts, versions or submissions against each other.

Are my texts safe?

Yes. Everything runs in your browser; your texts are not uploaded and not stored. That is the big advantage over online services: you can compare confidential or unpublished texts too without handing them over.
