What Calendar Week Is It Today?
The calendar week (CW) indicates which week of the year is currently ongoing. In Germany and most of Europe, calendar weeks follow the international ISO 8601 standard: the first calendar week is the week containing the first Thursday of the year. Each week starts on Monday.
Why Calendar Weeks Matter
Calendar weeks are ubiquitous in Germany — in business correspondence, delivery dates, project plans, doctor's offices, and government agencies. "Delivery in CW 12" is a perfectly normal statement. If you don't know the current calendar week, you're constantly looking it up.
ISO 8601 — The Standard
Under ISO 8601, a year has either 52 or 53 calendar weeks. The first CW starts on the Monday of the week containing January 4th. This means January 1st can sometimes belong to CW 52 or 53 of the previous year.
