Parental Allowance in Germany — BEEG §§ 1–4b
Parental allowance (Elterngeld) is a government benefit under the Federal Parental Allowance and Parental Leave Act (BEEG) that provides income replacement for parents caring for a newborn. Eligible parents must care for their child personally and work no more than 32 hours/week (§ 1 para. 1 BEEG).
Basic Parental Allowance — €300 to €1,800
Basic Elterngeld replaces 65% of pre-birth net income (assessment period: 12 months before birth/maternity protection). Minimum €300, maximum €1,800 per month (§ 2 BEEG). For net income below €1,240, the replacement rate increases up to 100% (low-income component).
ElterngeldPlus — Double Duration, Half Amount
ElterngeldPlus halves the monthly amount while doubling the duration (§ 4a BEEG): 1 basic month = 2 Plus months. Ideal for parents working part-time during parental leave.
Partnership Bonus
When both parents simultaneously work 24–32 hours/week, they receive up to 4 additional ElterngeldPlus months each (§ 4b BEEG).
Sibling Bonus & Multiple Birth Supplement
- Sibling bonus: 10% surcharge (min. €75/month basic) for siblings under 3 or 6 years
- Multiple birth: €300/month basic per additional child
