The German healthcare system is good, but it plays by its own rules, and none of them are written on a note in the waiting room. If you are new here you are often in the dark: do I go straight to a specialist or to the family doctor first? What does insurance cover, what does it not? Why do I get a pink prescription one time and a green one the next for the same medication? The Doctor Visit Navigator answers exactly these questions, without medical jargon and without talking down to you.

In Germany the family doctor (Hausarzt) is your first point of contact and your guide through the system. For many specialists you need a referral from the family doctor, for others - ophthalmologist, gynaecologist, dentist - you go directly. The specialist finder tells you for each field whether a referral is needed and which doctor handles which complaint. No more guessing which specialist treats your problem.

For health insurance, Germany draws a strict line between statutory (GKV) and private (PKV). The navigator explains the differences, what each one pays for, what you have to co-pay, and which rules apply to newcomers, students and the self-employed. That way you understand your insurance card before you put it on the counter for the first time.

In an emergency every second counts, and the numbers are simpler than you think. 112 is the ambulance and fire brigade, 116117 is the on-call medical service for urgent cases outside surgery hours when it is not life-threatening. The navigator helps you judge when you belong in the emergency room, when the on-call service is enough, and when a normal appointment the next day will do.

Prescriptions, sick notes and the pharmacy have their own choreography in Germany.
