What Health Insurance Calculator does

Statutory health insurance looks like a fixed price but is not. The general contribution rate of 14.6 percent is the same for all insurers, yet on top comes the individual additional rate that each insurer sets itself. Between the cheapest and the most expensive insurer the difference quickly exceeds one percent - depending on income that is several hundred euros a year. The calculator makes this difference visible and comparable.

The calculation follows the values for 2026. On your gross wage, 14.6 percent general contribution plus your insurer's additional rate is due, alongside care insurance at 3.6 percent (childless people from 23 pay a surcharge of 0.6 percent, so 4.2 percent in total). Everything is calculated only up to the contribution assessment ceiling; what you earn above that stays contribution-free. The calculator caps this automatically.

The split is decisive: for employees the employer bears half of the health insurance contribution including the additional rate, you pay only your share. The calculator shows both sides separately so you see what actually comes off your net pay - and are not shocked by the full contribution that you only partly bear yourself.

Over 20 of the large insurers are stored with their current additional rate, from Techniker Krankenkasse through the AOKs to regional company insurers. You see at a glance which insurer costs you how much and can deliberately pick the cheapest for your situation. Switching insurer is possible any time after the statutory binding periods - the calculator gives you the figure that makes the switch worthwhile or not.

The big special cases are covered too. For the self-employed the tool calculates differently, because they bear the full contribution alone and a minimum income is assumed. Students, pensioners and mini-jobbers have their own presets. And family insurance checks whether your spouse or children can be co-insured free of charge, as long as they stay below the income limit - a benefit that disappears entirely with private insurance.

On private insurance the calculator gives an honest classification: from when are you even exempt and allowed to switch, and what pitfalls lurk (premiums in old age, no free family insurance, a difficult route back to statutory cover). The tool does not replace insurance advice, but it delivers the hard numbers with which you make the decision soundly. Everything runs in your browser.

Frequently asked questions

How high is the health insurance contribution in 2026?

The general contribution rate is 14.6 percent, plus your insurer's additional rate (on average around 2.9 percent) and care insurance at 3.6 percent. Everything is calculated up to the assessment ceiling. For employees the health insurance contribution is split with the employer.

Why do I pay more even though I am childless?

Childless people from age 23 pay a surcharge of 0.6 percent in care insurance, so 4.2 instead of 3.6 percent. Once you have children the surcharge falls away, and with several children there are even reductions. The calculator accounts for this.

Is it worth switching health insurer?

The difference lies solely in the additional rate, since the general rate is the same everywhere. Between the cheapest and most expensive insurer there can be over one percent, so several hundred euros a year at higher income. The calculator shows the exact saving from a switch.

From when can I switch to private health insurance?

Employees can go private if their gross income exceeds the compulsory insurance threshold. The self-employed and civil servants have their own rules. The calculator shows the threshold and points out the drawbacks, such as rising premiums in old age and the loss of free family insurance.

Who can be co-insured in family insurance?

Spouses and children can be co-insured free of charge as long as their own income stays below the limit (slightly higher for a mini-job). That is a major statutory benefit, because in private insurance every family member pays a separate premium.

Does the contribution also apply to the self-employed?

The self-employed bear the full contribution alone, without an employer share, and a minimum income is assumed. The calculator has its own preset for this that accounts for these specifics. Your insurer is responsible for the final classification.
