What CV Builder does

Anyone looking for a job in Germany almost always needs a tabular CV: dates on the left, what you did on the right, the most recent on top. That sounds simple, yet many people get stuck on tables, shifting lines and templates that only lose their watermark once you pay. The CV Builder takes exactly that part off your hands. You write, it sets the page.

It is built for people who do not sit at a computer every day: job seekers, people working with the Jobcenter, newcomers to Germany, pupils and apprentices. There is only ever one section at a time, large fields, clear buttons and short hints in plain words. It works on a phone too. You type dates the way you know them, such as "03/2020", "March 2020" or "3.2020", and the tool turns them into a consistent month and year.

Every section comes with hand-written tips from everyday practice. Name gaps honestly instead of hiding them. You do not have to state marital status, religion or children; the General Equal Treatment Act protects you from being treated worse because of them. Photo and date of birth are optional. Work in your home country counts just as much as work in Germany. These hints come from experience; they are not legal or career advice.

For people who have moved to Germany, the languages section matters most. You pick the level of the Common European Framework of Reference from A1 to C2, or native, and the CV adds what the level means, for example "B2 (upper intermediate)". Certificates such as telc, Goethe or the German test for immigrants go right behind it. An optional line on your work permit saves the employer from guessing.

Before you send it off, the builder takes one more look: is a phone number missing? Is an end date before the start? Are there periods of more than three months without an entry? For a gap you can add an entry with one click and write briefly what happened: parental leave, caring for someone, job search or a language course. On top comes a short checklist to tick off, from proofreading to a finished cover letter.

There are three templates: Classic with the dates on the left, Modern with a coloured column for photo, contact and languages, and Compact, which fits everything on one page and sets the type a little smaller when needed. The headings in the PDF come in German or English. If you like, name, address, phone and email come from your encrypted Amtsprofil. Everything runs in your browser; you save your data as a file and load it again later, even on another device.

Frequently asked questions

Does a CV need a photo?

No. A photo is common in Germany but not required. The General Equal Treatment Act protects applicants from discrimination, which is why some employers even ask for no photo. If you want one, the builder cuts it to a 4:5 format.

How do I state my German skills correctly?

With the level of the Common European Framework of Reference, A1 to C2, and your certificate if you have one, for example "B1 (intermediate), DTZ B1". Better to be honest and go one level lower; otherwise it shows straight away in the interview.

What do I do about gaps in my CV?

Name them honestly. A short entry such as "parental leave", "caring for a relative", "job search and German course" or "moving to Germany" is better than a hole. The builder shows you periods of more than three months without an entry and can add an entry for them right away.

Is the PDF really free of watermarks?

Yes. No watermark, no logo of ours, no ads in the document. The CV belongs to you. The builder is part of Plus.

Where is my data stored?

In your browser, for your account. None of it goes to our server unless you file the finished PDF in your Aktenschrank yourself. "Save data" gives you a file you can use to load the CV again at any time.

Do I have to give my date of birth and nationality?

No, both are optional, just like marital status and religion, which no longer belong in a CV at all. If you are not from the EU, a short line on your work permit can help so the employer does not have to guess.

Does the builder help with the cover letter too?

You write the cover letter in the DIN 5008 letter wizard with the "Job application" template; the CV Builder takes you there at the end. Neither replaces application or career coaching, and whether an application works out is up to the employer.
