Ce que sait faire Arztbesuch-Navigator - Guide de la visite médicale

The German healthcare system is good, but it plays by its own rules, and none of them are written on a note in the waiting room. If you are new here you are often in the dark: do I go straight to a specialist or to the family doctor first? What does insurance cover, what does it not? Why do I get a pink prescription one time and a green one the next for the same medication? The Doctor Visit Navigator answers exactly these questions, without medical jargon and without talking down to you.

A family doctor (Hausarzt) is often a useful first contact and can coordinate findings, assess concerns and issue a referral where useful. You can generally contact specialist practices directly. Whether a referral, appointment code or medical order is needed depends on the specific care route, your practice and any family-doctor programme. The specialist finder shows relevant fields as orientation, not as a diagnosis.

For health insurance, Germany draws a strict line between statutory (GKV) and private (PKV). The navigator explains the differences, what each one pays for, what you have to co-pay, and which rules apply to newcomers, students and the self-employed. That way you understand your insurance card before you put it on the counter for the first time.

In an emergency every second counts, and the numbers are simpler than you think. 112 is the ambulance and fire brigade, 116117 is the on-call medical service for urgent cases outside surgery hours when it is not life-threatening. The navigator helps you judge when you belong in the emergency room, when the on-call service is enough, and when a normal appointment the next day will do.

Prescriptions, sick notes and the pharmacy have their own choreography in Germany. The electronic sick note (eAU) usually goes digitally to your insurer now, and the e-prescription is replacing the old paper slips. The navigator explains the prescription types, how to ask for painkillers at the pharmacy, and the difference between prescription-only and over-the-counter.

Because good communication in the treatment room is crucial, the navigator provides ready-made medical phrases for greeting, registration, describing symptoms and the pharmacy, in German with a translation. You can show them to staff or read them out loud. For the sensitive area of psychotherapy, the navigator also explains the path from the initial consultation through trial sessions to approved therapy.

Questions fréquentes

Do I need a referral for every specialist?

No. You can generally contact specialist practices directly. A referral may still matter for family-doctor programmes, individual practices, certain examinations or the appointment service. Confirm the route with the practice, your insurer or 116117.

What is the difference between 112 and 116117?

112 is the emergency number for life-threatening situations, ambulance and fire brigade. 116117 is the on-call medical service for urgent but not life-threatening cases outside surgery hours. When in doubt and in acute danger to life, always call 112.

What do the different prescription colours mean?

Traditionally pink is for statutory insurance prescriptions, green for non-binding recommendations without cost coverage, and blue for private prescriptions. Many are now issued digitally as an e-prescription. The navigator explains each type and what you pay.

What happens with my sick note?

The incapacity certificate is usually transmitted electronically (eAU) straight from the practice to your health insurer. Your employer retrieves it from there. You still have to notify your employer in good time that you are ill.

I barely speak German. How do I explain my complaint?

The navigator provides ready-made medical phrases for registration, symptoms, medical history and the pharmacy, in German with a translation. You can show them at reception or read them out loud so staff understand you.

How do I get a therapy slot?

The path starts with a psychotherapy consultation, followed by trial sessions, before the actual therapy is applied for and approved by your insurer. The navigator explains every step and how to find a practice.
