What School System Decoder does

The German school system is notoriously complicated, and there is a reason: education is a matter for the states. 16 federal states mean 16 variants, with different school types, transition rules, enrolment dates and names for the same thing. Anyone coming from abroad, or simply wanting to know which path is right for their child, quickly despairs. The School System Decoder brings light into the dark.

After the shared primary school, the system splits. The Gymnasium leads to the Abitur and thus to university entrance, the Realschule to the intermediate certificate, the Hauptschule to the basic certificate, and comprehensive schools combine several paths under one roof. The decoder explains each school type, which qualification it leads to, and how permeable the system is, because moving up is almost always possible.

A sensitive point is the transition after primary school. In some states the primary school recommendation is binding, in others only advisory, so the parents decide. The decoder shows you for each state what applies, so you set the course for your child deliberately and are not surprised by a rule that does not even exist elsewhere.

For families new to Germany, the welcome class is often the first step. There, children without German skills first learn the language before moving into a regular class. The school finder takes into account the age of the child, previous school years and a possible lateral entry, and gives you a concrete recommendation with next steps.

Enrolment has its own rules: starting school by a certain cut-off date, compulsory schooling, required documents like birth certificate, registration certificate and proof of vaccination. The decoder provides a checklist so you forget nothing at enrolment, and explains the particularities of your state.

Because school in Germany is free in principle but costs can still arise - school supplies, trips, lunch - the decoder also explains the education and participation benefits (BuT) that relieve low-income families. A glossary decodes the many technical terms. The tool does not replace advice from the school, but it gives you the orientation that no one else provides in a compact form.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the school system different in each state?

In Germany education is a matter for the states, and the 16 federal states run their own schools. That is why school types, transition rules and enrolment dates differ. The decoder shows you what applies concretely in each state.

What is the difference between Gymnasium, Realschule and Hauptschule?

The Gymnasium leads to the Abitur and university entrance, the Realschule to the intermediate certificate, and the Hauptschule to the basic certificate. The system is permeable: with good results you can later move to a higher school type or catch up on qualifications.

Is the primary school recommendation binding?

It depends on the state. In some states the recommendation is binding, in others only advisory, so the parents decide on the secondary school. The decoder shows you the rule for your state.

What is a welcome class?

A welcome class is for newly arrived children without German skills. There they first learn the language before moving into a regular class. The school finder accounts for lateral entry and points to this path.

Which documents do I need for enrolment?

Usually a birth certificate, registration certificate and proof of vaccination, plus further documents depending on the state. The decoder provides a checklist so you forget nothing at enrolment.
