School System Decoder

The German school system is notoriously complicated, and there is a reason: education is a matter for the states. 16 federal states mean 16 variants, with different school types, transition rules, enrolment dates and names for the same thing. Anyone coming from abroad, or simply wanting to know which path is right for their child, quickly despairs. The School System Decoder brings light into the dark.

After the shared primary school, the system splits. The Gymnasium leads to the Abitur and thus to university entrance, the Realschule to the intermediate certificate, the Hauptschule to the basic certificate, and comprehensive schools combine several paths under one roof. The decoder explains each school type, which qualification it leads to, and how permeable the system is, because moving up is almost always possible.

A sensitive point is the transition after primary school. In some states the primary school recommendation is binding, in others only advisory, so the parents decide. The decoder shows you for each state what applies, so you set the course for your child deliberately and are not surprised by a rule that does not even exist elsewhere.

For families new to Germany, the welcome class is often the first step. There, children without German skills first learn the language before moving into a regular class.
