What Basic Income Support Eligibility Checker does

Grundsicherungsgeld is the basic income support for people capable of working under SGB II. It replaced Bürgergeld on 1 July 2026, which in turn followed Hartz IV in 2023; if you already received Bürgergeld you do not need to apply again. Whether you qualify hinges on three conditions: you are between 15 and retirement age, you are capable of working (can work at least three hours a day) and you have your habitual residence in Germany. The checker asks these points right at the start so you do not calculate in vain.

The core is the needs calculation. It consists of the standard need and the housing costs. The standard rate for single people in 2026 is 563 euros, for partners in a needs community 506 euros each, and for children staggered by age (357 euros for 0 to 5, 390 euros for 6 to 13, 471 euros for 14 to 17). The checker adds up the standard rates for everyone in your household automatically.

For rent an important special rule applies: during the first twelve months (the so-called grace period) your actual warm rent is covered, but since 1 July 2026 only up to one and a half times the local reasonableness limit. Afterwards the reasonableness limit itself applies. The checker distinguishes these two cases and credits the housing costs accordingly so the estimate fits your situation.

Then comes the income crediting, which many underestimate. Not every euro earned is fully deducted: the first 100 euros stay entirely exempt, from 100 to 520 euros you keep 20 percent, from 520 to 1,000 euros 30 percent, and above that up to the ceiling another 10 percent. Other income such as child benefit or alimony, by contrast, is fully credited. The checker makes this calculation transparent, line by line.

Assets are checked too. Since 1 July 2026 there is no grace period for assets. The protected amount depends on the age of each person in the needs community: up to 30 years 5,000 euros, from 31 10,000 euros, from 41 12,500 euros, from 51 20,000 euros. Retirement savings, a reasonable owner-occupied home and normal household goods are protected anyway. If your assets exceed the limit, the checker warns you and explains why the entitlement then falls away.

At the end there is a concrete figure: your likely Grundsicherungsgeld entitlement per month, cleanly derived from need minus creditable income. It remains important: the Jobcenter considers further factors such as exact rent ceilings, additional needs for pregnancy or disability and individual deductible amounts. The checker is your guidance, not legal advice and not a decision. Everything runs in your browser.

Frequently asked questions

What is the standard rate in 2026 (Grundsicherungsgeld, formerly Bürgergeld)?

For single people it is 563 euros a month (unchanged zero round). Partners in a needs community each receive 506 euros. Children get, staggered by age, 357 euros (0 to 5), 390 euros (6 to 13) or 471 euros (14 to 17). Housing costs come on top.

Is my whole rent covered?

During the first twelve months (grace period) your actual warm rent is covered, but since 1 July 2026 only up to one and a half times the local reasonableness limit. Afterwards the local ceilings apply, and you may have to reduce an excessive rent. The checker accounts for both phases.

How much may I earn on top of Grundsicherungsgeld?

The first 100 euros stay exempt. From 100 to 520 euros you keep 20 percent, from 520 to 1,000 euros 30 percent and above that up to the limit 10 percent. For the detailed calculation there is our citizen income side earnings simulator.

How much wealth may I have with Grundsicherungsgeld?

Since 1 July 2026 the protected assets depend on the age of each person in the needs community: up to 30 years 5,000 euros, from 31 10,000 euros, from 41 12,500 euros, from 51 20,000 euros. The former 40,000-euro grace period no longer exists. Retirement savings, a reasonable owner-occupied home and normal household goods stay protected on top.

Do I get Grundsicherungsgeld if I work?

Yes, that is possible. If your income does not cover the total need, you can receive top-up Grundsicherungsgeld. Thanks to the allowances working almost always pays off, because you keep part of the earnings on top.

Is the result binding?

No. It is a simplified estimate. The Jobcenter considers further factors such as exact rent ceilings, additional needs for pregnancy or disability and individual deductible amounts. For a binding decision you apply at the Jobcenter.
