A look inside
This safe preview shows what the tool is for without running account-only actions.
What VAT ID Verification does
If you supply businesses in other EU countries, you often invoice without German VAT: as a tax-free intra-EU supply, or so that the customer pays the tax in their own country (reverse charge). For that your customer has to use a valid VAT ID from their country. If the number is wrong, expired or does not belong to them at all, the tax office can later claim the tax from you. That is why a look beforehand pays off.
Under § 18e UStG the German Federal Central Tax Office (BZSt) confirms on request whether a foreign VAT ID is valid. The simple confirmation only tells you whether the number was valid at the time of the request. The qualified confirmation goes further: it also compares the company name, city and, if you like, street and postcode with the data the other EU country holds. Each field comes back with a letter: A means match, B means no match, C means not asked, D means the country does not share it.
Werkzeu.ge sends your request through the BZSt's official interface (eVatR), which replaced the old XML-RPC interface in July 2025. Before that we check the structure of both numbers so a typo does not first show up at the office: your own number must be German, because the BZSt only answers requests made with a German VAT ID, and your customer's number must fit their country's scheme. Greece is EL, Northern Ireland XI.
You see the result right away in plain words: valid, not yet valid, no longer valid or not assigned, plus for each field what matches and what does not. The BZSt wording sits next to it, unchanged, with status code and request id. If something does not match, we tell you the usual reasons (legal form, abbreviated street, accents) and what to do next.
Every answer becomes a PDF protocol with date and time, both numbers, your entries, the result per field and the BZSt message. The original answer is attached to the PDF unchanged, with a checksum. If you like, the protocol goes straight into the Aktenschrank under Fakturen / USt-IdNr-Prüfungen; otherwise you download it. A list of your recent checks stays only in your browser, and only with numbers and results.
Important: the proof is the BZSt confirmation itself; our protocol only records it. Whether a supply really is tax-free or reverse charge applies depends on further conditions, and in the end your tax office decides. The VAT ID Verification helps you prepare your own records cleanly. It is not a substitute for tax advice.
Features
Simple or qualified
Check just the number or also compare company name, city, street and postcode, exactly as the BZSt offers it.
Result per field in plain words
A, B, C and D translated into "matches", "does not match", "not asked" and "not provided", with the next step.
Protocol as a PDF
Date, time, both numbers, your entries, status code and BZSt wording. The original answer is attached to the PDF with a checksum.
Straight into the Aktenschrank
If you like, Werkzeu.ge files the protocol under Fakturen / USt-IdNr-Prüfungen, next to your invoices.
Typos show up first
Both numbers are checked for structure before anything goes to the office. GR instead of EL or a missing digit shows up at once.
Calm when the office is down
If the BZSt does not answer, we tell you when to try again instead of flooding the interface with retries.
How it works
- 1
Enter your own number
Enter your German VAT ID or take it from your Amtsprofil. We remember it in your browser.
- 2
Customer number and company data
Enter your customer's VAT ID with the country code. For the qualified check add company name and city; street and postcode are optional.
- 3
Check at the BZSt
One click and the BZSt asks the other EU country. That usually takes only a few seconds.
- 4
Keep the protocol
Read the result, download the protocol or have it filed in the Aktenschrank, and keep it with the invoice.
Who needs this
Frequently asked questions
Is the simple check enough?
The simple check only shows that the number is valid, not who it belongs to. For tax-free supplies to other EU countries the qualified check with company name and city is the safer proof. What is enough in your case is best settled with your tax adviser.
Does the protocol replace the BZSt confirmation?
No. The proof is the BZSt confirmation. Our protocol records it with time, status code, request id and the unchanged original answer so you can keep it properly. It is not tax advice and not a decision on tax exemption.
What do A, B, C and D mean?
A: your entry matches the registered data. B: it does not match, often only because of the spelling. C: you left the field empty. D: the other EU country does not share this detail, so the BZSt only confirms the number.
Why do I need a German VAT ID?
The BZSt only answers confirmation requests made with a valid German VAT ID. If you do not have one yet, you apply for it at the BZSt. German numbers of your customers cannot be checked this way.
What happens if the BZSt is not reachable?
Then we tell you after how many minutes to try again. Between 11 pm and 5 am the BZSt may carry out maintenance. We do not repeat the request automatically, because the BZSt asks callers not to retry right away.
What does Werkzeu.ge keep from my request?
The numbers and, for the qualified check, name and address go to the BZSt through our server. Only the protocol in your Aktenschrank is stored, if you want that. Our server logs only note that a check ran and the status code, never numbers, names or addresses.
