III/V, IV/IV or IV with factor - which tax class combination gives you the most net income as a married couple? The tax class optimizer works through the variants for both your incomes, shows the monthly difference and warns of the typical back-payment trap with III/V, so you make the choice that truly fits you.

Що вміє Оптимізація податкових класів для подружжя

Once you are married you may combine your wage tax classes - and this choice decides how much net income lands in your account each month. First, the essential point: the tax class does not change the total tax you owe at year-end. It only shifts who pays how much in advance during the year. Even so, the right choice pays off, because it affects your cash flow and even wage-replacement benefits. The optimizer makes the differences visible.

There are three classic combinations. IV/IV is the standard and fits well when you earn roughly the same - each is taxed on their own and year-end holds few surprises. III/V pays off when one earns considerably more than the other: the higher earner takes class III with low deductions, the other class V with high ones. There is often more net available this way, but the catch comes later.

That catch is the back payment. With III/V too little tax tends to be withheld during the year, so a back payment threatens at the joint assessment - and with it sometimes an obligation to file a return and make advance payments. The optimizer explicitly flags this risk so the tax office does not catch you cold a year later.

The most elegant solution is often the factor method, that is IV with factor. Here the tax office distributes the tax burden fairly during the year according to the ratio of your incomes. Each pays roughly what actually falls on them in the end - this minimizes both back payments and interest-free advances to the state. The optimizer works through this variant too and compares it with the others.

An often underestimated point is the effect on wage-replacement benefits. Parental allowance, unemployment benefit, sick pay and maternity benefit are based on net income. For parental allowance, a timely switch to a more favourable tax class can noticeably raise the benefit. For unemployment benefit, however, the class at the start of the year counts, and a later switch is only taken into account under narrow conditions (§ 153 SGB III). The optimizer considers this link so you choose the tax class not only for monthly net income but also with an eye on planned parental leave.

In the end your specific case counts. The optimizer takes both your gross incomes, works through the permissible combinations and shows you the joint monthly net income per variant plus a note on whether a back payment is likely. That turns a gut decision into a calculation you can follow.

The optimizer is part of Plus. For the calculation your income figures go to our server in Germany and are not stored there. The optimizer does not replace tax advice or the tax office's binding calculation, but it gives you a solid orientation for the application to switch tax class.

Поширені запитання

Which tax class combination is best for married couples?

It depends on the ratio of your incomes. With similar earnings IV/IV often fits, with very different earnings III/V or the factor method. The factor method distributes the burden most fairly during the year. The optimizer works through all variants for your incomes.

Do I save tax overall through the tax class?

No. The tax class only changes how much is withheld in advance during the year, not the total tax fixed at assessment. But it affects your monthly cash flow and wage-replacement benefits like parental allowance. The optimizer makes these effects visible.

Why does III/V risk a back payment?

With III/V little is withheld from the higher earner and a lot from the other. On balance too little tax is often prepaid, so a back payment arises at the joint assessment - sometimes tied to an obligation to file a return. The optimizer warns of this effect.

Що таке метод із коефіцієнтом (Faktorverfahren)?

With the factor method you both keep class IV, but the tax office sets a factor that distributes the expected tax fairly by your incomes during the year. So each pays roughly what falls on them in the end, and back payments are minimized.

Does the tax class affect parental allowance?

Yes. Parental allowance and other wage-replacement benefits are based on net income. Anyone who switches to a more favourable tax class in good time before parental leave can noticeably raise their allowance. The optimizer considers this link.

Does the optimizer replace tax advice?

No. It provides a solid orientation and makes the differences tangible but does not replace individual tax advice or the tax office's binding calculation. Use the result as a basis for the application to switch tax class.
