Cancelling a contract sounds trivial until you face the blank page. Which notice period applies? To which date can you cancel? Is an email enough or must it be in writing? And worse: is cancellation even the right tool, or do you have a right of withdrawal that is far stronger? This cancellation letter takes all these questions off your plate instead of leaving you with a generic template.

The cleverest part is the triage between withdrawal and cancellation. If you concluded a contract online or by phone and it is less than 14 days old, you probably have a right of withdrawal under Section 355 BGB. Withdrawal is stronger than cancellation: the contract is undone retroactively and all payments must be refunded, whereas cancellation only works for the future. The tool spots these cases and points them out before you pick the wrong remedy.
For the deadline, the engine computes a guide value for the end date, counted from the expected receipt of your letter. For a mobile contract after the minimum term, for example, one month from receipt; for residential rent the 3rd-business-day rule under Section 573c BGB; for an employment contract the periods from Section 622 BGB. Where the date only follows from your contract, for example with insurance, the tool says so openly instead of inventing one.
The delivery method is handled cleanly too. The tool tells you when a cancellation needs written form under Section 126 BGB or whether text form suffices, and tells you how to prove receipt: since a 2025 Federal Labour Court ruling the slip of an Einwurf-Einschreiben alone is often not enough; safer are registered mail with a return receipt or a messenger with a written record.

Is an email enough to cancel?
It depends on the contract. Since the legal reform, many consumer contracts can be cancelled in text form, so by email or a cancellation button too. Others need written form with a handwritten signature under Section 126 BGB. The cancellation letter tells you which form applies for your contract type.
What is the difference between withdrawal and cancellation?
Withdrawal undoes a contract retroactively so all payments are refunded - for distance contracts it usually applies 14 days after conclusion or instruction under Section 355 BGB. Cancellation, by contrast, ends the contract only for the future. When both are possible, withdrawal is almost always the stronger choice, and the tool flags it.
How do I work out the right notice period?
The notice engine knows the basic legal rules per contract type and computes a guide value that you compare with your contract. It accounts for minimum terms, monthly cancellability after the TKG reform, the 3rd-business-day rule under Section 573c BGB and the employment periods under Section 622 BGB. If your contract says otherwise, the contract usually counts.
Should I cancel by registered mail?
In a dispute, what counts is being able to prove the cancellation arrived. Since a 2025 Federal Labour Court ruling the slip of an Einwurf-Einschreiben alone is often not enough. Safer are registered mail with a return receipt or a messenger who records the delivery. The tool tells you this for your contract type.
Can I cancel my employment contract with this?
